Illuminated Students at Aberdeen University

The new Student Union at Aberdeen University was designed as an open and airy space with a vaulted roof as the key focal point.  As this facility provides a restaurant and meeting area for the students, a vital goal of the lighting design was to contribute to the vibrant and busy nature of The Hub without impeding the use of area.

The roof space is an intersting architectural feature and worth of decorative illumination; therefore, provided the necessary lighting levels for the meeting and eating areas using traditional pendant luminaires would have imposed on the feeling of The Hub.  Similarly, reflective uplighting would have also been imposing as well as inefficient as a lighting techique.  Siteco instead treated the space as an 'outdoor' area and luminaires typically used for exterior applications were used to provide the general illumination.  The exterior luminaires were mounted via wall fixing spigots as well as more columns.

Siteco's 'street lighting' luminaires then provided the ideal canopy from which to light the roof space.  LED spotlights were mounted atop of the GALAXSiE column luminaires to wash the ceiling in a variety of funky colours.  LED strips along the coving contributed to the vibrant feature on the roof to create an inspired and contemporary solution.
