Light As A Productive factor

Natural daylight defines the biological rhythm of people. The more harmoniously artificial light is balanced and synchronised with this, the less strenuous it is for people, although they are exposed to too little of the natural adaptation of light during the progress of the day.

About 80% of all information reaches us through our eyes. The worse lighting conditions are, the more stressed we are and the less we see. Seeing is determined by rods and cones within the eye's retina. American researchers have now discovered a third type of cell, the photoreceptor. Depending upon the brightness and colour of light this emits electrical impulses that pass via nerves directly to our biological clock within the brain and the appendaged pineal gland.

The biological clock controls rhythms in daily and yearly cycles to influence such activities as body temperature, alertness and the interplay between the sleep hormone Melatonin and the stress hormone Cortisol. The pineal gland produces Melatonin. With this researchers have discovered the mechanism by which light can keep people awake or make them drowsy.

When planned correctly, light can be implemented more strongly than before as a factor influencing productivity. Intelligent systems such as lighting management software, daylight systems, luminaire modules with a high illuminance level, clever light directing technologies such as Eldacon and Siteco Mirrortec make sure that the biological rhythm of people harmonises with their everyday work in industry or in the office.
