Lighting ConceptsRecommendations found in the standards concerned with illuminance levels in working areas are oriented mainly to the necessary visual performance for the job at hand, and consider 500 lux for normal office work as adequate. But from a standpoint concerned with biological effects, we are hampered by a serious lack of knowledge. Avoidance of 'biological darkness'The light intensity on our cornea is decisive for biological effectiveness. A suitable lighting installation must satisfy two needs: 1. Working light for the task area:meaning the required light for the visual job at hand. 2. The necessary level of light for the eye, i.e. the lighting components for biological effectiveness, for example large reflector surfaces with reduced luminance levels satisfying required vertical illuminance levels, coupled with strict glare avoidance.
