Pillar Luminaires For The AOL Arena

In the context of the Football World Championships 2006, the landscape architects Meyer Schramm Bontrup were commissioned with the improvement of the Hamburger AOL/ Fifa and the Colourline Arena surroundings.  In addition to the renewal of the urban furniture and signing, the redesign of the footpaths that lead to the stadium from the nearby Stellingen underground station and parking lots played a central role.

It was planned that the asphalted routes that lead partly through the complex terrain of an industrial area should be upgraded, thereby establishing a local area for relaxation, walking and jogging. The connection to Hamburg's Volkspark should also be made apparent.

The architects' basic line of thought was to give the partly overgrown paths that are often devoid of life in the evenings more room, thereby allowing a higher safety level for users.
With the preparation of a 4m-wide strip of grass on either side of the path, the user has the feeling of being in open area. In context of this, the lighting had gained an additional importance.

The following criteria needed to be satisfied:

Promotion of safety and security
Low key, unobtrusive design
Directive function
Vandal-proof
Low maintenance factor, ecenomy of operation
Assignability to other areas of the Volkspark

A lighting concept was created together with the Hamburg lighting consultant Markus Kreutzmann that was based upon the deployment of pillar luminaires. Simplicity is the determining principle here. The pillar with all-round beam distribution does not only illuminate the route but also its 'hinterland'. This gives the space an exposed characteristic that can be easily viewed and seen into. 2x 55 W  compact fluorescent lamping creates a good quality vertical illuminance that aids the recognition of facial features (leading to a feeling of safety). Operational and maintenance costs also remain low for the town (lowered night-time lighting).
A diameter of 230mm and a height of 4500mm makes climbing and therefore vandalism difficult. The directional function during daytime is achieved with a HSV blue luminaire coating, and during the evening two blue high performance LEDs take over this duty with a  180° beam distribution and a 24° beam angle.

The pillar luminaire is intended to be deployed in other parts of the park at a later stage.
