Light for the Football Opera House
The Giuseppe-Meazza Stadium in Milan (formerly San Siro) is home to the rival football clubs AC Milan and Inter and accomodates 85,700 spectators. The stadium, constructed in 1925/26 in the area of San Siro in Milan and enlarged in the 50's, is one of the most attractive football stadiums in Europe thanks to its characteristic construction, and is known amongst fans reverently as L’Opera del Calcio (football opera house). Its present appearance came about when a third stand area was constructed for the 1990 football world championships. Even at that time, lighting technology from Siemens was relied upon. In 1979, the stadium was renamed in memory of the legendary Milan football player Giuseppe Meazza who had died just before.
The arena lighting has now been modernised with 364 rotosymmetrical SiCompact R2 MAXI projectors from Siteco. The new solution is compatible in every way with the stadium roofing's metal structure. Each projector has been exactly positioned in order to maximise the collective effect of the luminaires as a whole.
The lighting solution satisfies stringent UEFA regulations and is of course suitable for TV broadcasting. 2000 lux are guaranteed for the main television camera. The increase in the number of projectors from 252 to 364 is a result of the luminaire mounting heights of 53 or 54 metres. The projectors have been mounted onto the roofing of the stadium, either on the same height as the walkways or upon parapets at 54 metres. Implementation of the new Siteco projectors has resulted in an energy consumption decrease of 16%, from 900KW to 750KW. On the other hand, the vertical illuminance for the main television camera has increased from 1400 lux to 2000 lux (+42%).
Siteco SiCompact R2 MAXI projectors can be equipped with lamping from Osram, Sylvania and Radium - meaning that as well as optimal performance and energy efficiency characteristics the new installation offers added flexibility of use. An IP65 protection rating as well as a weather-proof sealing system distinctly increase the range of deployment possibilities for the luminaire.
