Light Aids Customer Orientation
Short routes and daylight on all storeys characterise the architecture of the new Berlin main railway station. The construction is filagrane, generous and flooded with light. The 321m long glass hall runs in an east-west direction and is crossed in a north-south direction by the 160m long and 40m wide main station hall. The transparent form of the station as well as a well thought-out guidance system facilitate orientation for travellers.
The station hall is framed by two 46m high buildings that encompass and roof the railway tracks. The architecture is therefore characterised by a crossover form. The Hamburg architects Gerkan, Marg & Partner defined the function of the station as an interface in an ever-changing Europe as the main leitmotif for their architecture.
Quadratic recessed downlights with 70W and 150W HQI-TS metal halide lamps with IP54 protection have been installed in the platform areas. They were also deployed for the transit areas and the crossing areas to the various platforms. The downlights have a medium-wide beam angle, lending an optimal illumination of the surfaces combined with a maximum of energy efficiency.
The luminaires have a glass cover that is slightly recessed, and have been manufactured according to the railways approval construction type II. Module size is 300x300mm or larger. Module groups can accomodate emergency lighting or loudspeakers for the announcement of travel information. Siteco batten luminaires have been fitted for the cove lighting of the ticket hall.
