The Lighting Technology Department of Darmstadt Technical University headed by Professor Khanh, the City of Darmstadt, the energy provider HSE and Siteco equipped and tested the test road.

The survey is the first scientifically-based study that has directly compared conventional luminaires and an LED luminaire in real conditions.

In terms of optical and energy related factors, and especially with regard to the qualitative evaluation of the lighting situation, the DL 10 LED luminaire from Siteco was clearly superior.

A 500 m long residential road in Darmstadt, Germany was divided into four sections and equipped with four different lighting solutions.

HME 125W mercury vapour lamps, SON-H 68W and HST 70W high pressure sodium vapour lamps and DL 10 LED luminaires were tested.

The luminaires were measured in laboratory conditions and illuminance levels on the carriageway and power consumption required were determined.

The judgement of users was used by the survey for the qualitative evaluation of lighting conditions in the different road sections.

With complete evaluation, the LED road section with DL 10 luminaires was the favourite of test persons in terms of total effect.
