Out of the shadows – new LED floodlighting system from SITECO makes for more fun on the piste at the Horn ski resort

Just in time for the 2016/17 ski season, the ski resort in Horn in Appenzellerland (Switzerland) puts its new modern floodlighting system into operation. Designed and implemented by SITECO, the LED lighting system makes the small local lift, which is operated by a local association with the help of many volunteers, even more attractive. Visitors can now also go skiing in the evening under optimum lighting conditions.

The conventional floodlights that had previously been in place at the Horn ski resort only illuminated the slope very irregularly. Since the shadows and sudden changes from bright to dark made night-time skiing less fun, the decision was taken to upgrade and improve the lighting. The most important requirement was to provide more uniform illumination of the piste. For budget reasons the solution needed to be affordable and allow efficient and energy-saving operation. Following an in-depth analysis on site, SITECO developed an innovative LED lighting solution – first for the left half of the piste. 21 Floodlight 20 Maxi floodlights now provide uniform illumination and optimum visibility for skiers. Thanks to state-of-the-art LED technology from SITECO, glare and light emission have been reduced to a minimum and the new lighting system is also extremely energy-efficient, as requested. In the second phase the right side will also be illuminated.

Powerful SITECO LED floodlight for large-scale sports lighting

The Maxi version of the Floodlight 20 is ideal for lighting large areas and has been designed for installation starting at 14 meters. At a connected load of only 875 W, this innovative LED luminaire achieves an extremely high luminous flux of 100,000 lumen. The lens optics provides precise directional light, minimal glare and excellent efficiency. At 400 kg per square meter the SITECO LED floodlights can carry a particularly high snow load – which is extremely important for use at ski resorts. The modular design of the Floodlight LED family of luminaires – a housing with electronic control gear, ESD protected LED module and fastening element – makes them easy to install and maintain and allows modules to be upgraded at any time. Operators and skiers have been impressed with the new quality of light at Horn. Average illuminance (Em) is approximately 60 lux and illuminance uniformity >0.50. Apart from being switched on and off the system can also be dimmed to 50 percent, if required. The Floodlight 20 even offers flickerfree lighting, perfect for Video recordings in super slow motion.
